For one day at the exhibition grounds in Hanover, the focus is on the next generation. The day program held in German covers talks, presentations and networking events, and takes place in Hall 13. The event culminates in the Young Farmers Party that takes place in the “Munich hall” from 18:30 pm onwards. On the day before, on November 13, young breeders will have the opportunity to meet and network at the cross-species Young Breeders’ Meeting. In addition, the Job Wall offers a compact overview of current job advertisements in the agricultural industry.
The Young Farmers Day on November 14 is the central meeting place for all those at the beginning of their career in agriculture and agribusiness. The event caters for the needs of the entire young segment: Young farmers, students, pupils and young professionals in the agricultural upstream or downstream industry. The varied program offers young people the opportunity to gather knowledge, make new contacts, listen to exciting presentations and panel discussions and take part in hands-on activities at the DLG stand in Hall 13. Though held in German, the event will attract international interest and international attendees.
Young Farmers Day program
The Young Farmers Day starts at 9:30 a.m. with the panel discussion: “Increasing animal welfare, surviving globally – is that possible?”. Rebecca Derstappen from the Thünen Institute, Germany; Verena Beck, Brand Fleisch; and Jörg Struve, Struve Agrar will talk about higher animal welfare standards and higher production costs, a situation that has led some producers and players in the meat industry to address their international competitiveness. What are the solutions?
Three keynote speeches on the topic of direct farm sales will take place at 10:30 am, followed by a panel discussion at 11:30 am where Bernhard Osterburg from the Thünen Institute, Luisa Dahmen, a young farmer and agricultural science student, and KLIM GmbH will explore the question: “Cows as climate pests? What is behind the talk about milk production as a climate killer?”
Jurek Häner’s presentation at 12:30 p.m. will focus on “Future strategies for biogas plants: opportunities in the wake of the New German Renewable Energy Act (EEG)”. At 13:00, Maarten Sillekens (Pure Graze), Mr. Costello (Weidemilch Brandenburg) and Thomas Apelt (“low-cost” dairy farm in Halver, Sauerland) will be looking at alternative housing options to the conventional animal housing.
Young career starters are in just the right place at 2 p.m. for the panel discussion “Herd management programs – the foundation for your success in dairy cattle management”. Attendees will learn how a herd management program can help them develop the skills they need for a successful future in dairy farming. Presenter Veronika Riepl-Bauer (Junge DLG) will interview Nina Eichberg (DLG Academy) and Helge Lange (dairyQ) about two very different herd management programs.
At the last talk of the day, “Junge DLG: Your springboard to the future”, young visitors will learn what it means to be part of the Junge DLG network and how to get involved. Three Young DLG members will report on how the Junge DLG network has helped them in their studies and careers and why it has been beneficial to be active in this network.
In addition on 14 November, the Junge DLG is organizing a “Guided Innovations Tour” of the exhibition grounds in cooperation with the two German universities of Kiel and Weihenstephan. The tour, which includes selected innovations and live commentary, starts at 1 pm. Registration is required, open from the beginning of October at the EuroTier website.
